If you're planning to use the cabin as a short-term rental, our 1- and 2-bedroom kits tend to perform best on Airbnb and VRBO in most markets. Guests love the authentic log cabin experience, and these sizes are easy to manage and maintain.
For multigenerational or large-group use, the 4- and 5-bedroom kits offer serious square footage without sacrificing the warmth and character that make a log cabin feel like home.

Pro tip: Before you finalize your building site, visit it at different times of day and in different weather conditions. A site that looks perfect on a sunny afternoon can look very different after a heavy rain.

Permit requirements vary dramatically by county and state. Here's a general overview — not legal advice — of what most builders encounter.
The good news: rural counties are often more relaxed than suburban or urban jurisdictions. Many customers build their cabin with a simple residential building permit. Others — particularly in very rural areas — build under a threshold that requires no permit at all.
Best first step: Call your county assessor's or planning department's office before you do anything else. Most offices are surprisingly helpful and can tell you exactly what's required for your parcel in 15 minutes.
Consider hiring a permit expediter — In some counties, a local permit expediter ($500–$2,500) can navigate the process for you, especially if your project involves septic, well, or complex zoning. They know the local staff and can cut weeks off the timeline.

Your foundation choice affects your cost, timeline, and long-term options. Here are the three most common approaches our customers use.
The most permanent option. Poured in place and highly durable. Best for full-time living, year-round use, and when you want the option to finish a basement later.

Full-time / permanentFlexible and adaptable. Ideal for uneven terrain, hillsides, and flood-prone areas. Popular for off-grid builds. The cabin can be repositioned if needed (with effort).

Seasonal / budget-friendlyFor most of our smaller kits (Studio Shack, Hunt Shack, 1-Bedroom), a well-built gravel pad or pier foundation is completely sufficient. For larger cabins or year-round use, we recommend consulting a local contractor about slab or engineered pier options.
Local matters: Foundation costs vary enormously by soil type, frost depth, local labor rates, and terrain. Get at least two local quotes before budgeting. Your county building department may also specify minimum foundation requirements.
Section 06
From placing your order to your first night in the cabin, here's a realistic look at the timeline for a typical Fireside Cabin Kit project.
Clear the building site, grade if needed, and install your foundation. This phase can often happen in parallel with your kit lead time.
Your kit is cut, numbered, packaged, and shipped. Lead time varies by kit size and current production schedule. We'll confirm your delivery window at order.
Two to three people working together can assemble the shell of a smaller kit in a couple of weekends. Larger 4- and 5-bedroom kits typically take a full week or two with a larger crew.
Roofing, insulation, interior walls, electrical, plumbing, flooring, and fixtures. This phase varies the most — a simple hunting cabin can be finished in a few weekends; a full-finish year-round cabin might take several months.
If your build required a permit, you'll need a final inspection before occupancy. Schedule this as you complete interior work — inspectors in rural counties can sometimes be booked out 2–4 weeks.
Total realistic timeline: Most customers go from order to occupancy in 4–8 months, depending on their finishing goals. A simple seasonal hunting cabin can be ready much faster.
Section 07
Every Fireside Cabin Kit is pre-cut, pre-numbered, and packaged for a smooth build. Here's what arrives on your delivery truck.
Every component in your kit is labeled with a corresponding number in the assembly manual. You don't need to be an experienced builder — our manuals are designed to guide a motivated first-time builder through every step.
Not included — source locally or hire subs: Foundation, roofing material (shingles, metal, etc.), interior finishing materials, electrical wiring and fixtures, plumbing rough-in and fixtures, insulation, and interior doors. Budget for these separately — see Section 08 for typical cost ranges.
We recommend reviewing the full assembly manual (included in your kit documentation, available to preview on any product page) before your kit arrives. Knowing the process before the truck pulls in makes a real difference.

The kit is often 40–60% of total project cost. Plan for these common add-on expenses so you're not surprised mid-build.

DIY vs. hire out: Many of our customers self-perform the shell assembly and some of the finish work, significantly reducing labor costs. Electrical and plumbing work typically requires licensed contractors and inspections — budget accordingly.
A good rule of thumb: budget 1.5–2× the kit price for a fully finished, move-in-ready cabin with utility hookups. A simpler seasonal cabin with a composting toilet and off-grid power can be completed for much less.

Do I need a contractor to build a Fireside kit?
Most of our customers build their kit themselves or with help from friends and family. Our assembly manuals are designed for motivated first-time builders. For smaller kits (Studio Shack through 2-Bedroom), a two- to three-person crew with basic carpentry skills can absolutely do it. Larger kits (4-bedroom and up) may benefit from hiring a general contractor for the shell assembly.
Can I finance the purchase?
We recommend checking with your local bank or credit union for construction loans or land loans. Some customers also use personal loans or HELOCs on existing property. Financing options vary widely by lender, and we don't offer financing directly — but most of our customers find a solution that works for their situation.
How long do log cabin kits last?
With proper maintenance — re-staining and sealing every 3–5 years, keeping gutters clear, and promptly addressing any moisture intrusion — log cabins can last 100 years or more. Some of the most beloved log structures in North America are over 150 years old. Our kits use quality-selected logs that are built for longevity.
Can I customize the kit?
Our standard kits follow the included floor plans. If you need a different layout, non-standard window placement, or a size that's between our standard offerings, contact us — we work with partners who can accommodate custom sizing and layout changes. Lead times for custom kits are typically longer.
What if a piece is damaged in shipping?
Contact us with photos within 5 business days of delivery. We'll arrange to replace damaged components at no charge. We take every order seriously and stand behind what we ship. Delays in reporting may affect our ability to make a warranty claim with the carrier — so inspect your delivery the day it arrives.
